In April 2018 the Leeds Paediatric Neuro-disability team (Dr Arnab Seal, Jo Sandiford, speech therapist and Helen Dowden ,physiotherapist) returned to continue to teach, this time in Antsirabe, a lovely town. Evaluations showed that they had contributed to the knowledge and confidence of both the established and the new Malagasy participants. They also supported the developing parent groups. They were joined by two medical students from Leeds each doing a small piece of qualitative research under Anne’s supervision, facilitated by Dr Renaud and Dr Irene of the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics (CAM). We are confident that such research contributes to knowledge in- country and we always work jointly with our Malagasy colleagues to produce published research.

In late 2018 Dr Ram will take a spinal cord injury team from Tana to India to the Christian Medical College in Vellore to learn from their long experience of managing spinal cord injury in a low resource setting. The Malagasy will also learn about their Community Rehabilitation projects. Spinal cord injury rehabilitation is beginning in Fianarantsoa, some 6hrs away from the capital, under the direction of another of our DU graduates, Dr Emodeur. He and a member of his team will go with Dr Ram and Dr Renaud (who supports them) to the AFSCIN meeting in the autumn.
